@forfarriersbyfarriers: I can’t believe it, this is rare but it has happened. A hawthorn has punctured the horse’s sole and abscessed. I feel from removing the thorn it will relieve the lameness but the owner is going to poultice it to ensure there is no infection in there before the hole closes up. I was told that hawthorns were a wee bit toxic and could cause blindness if it scratched your eye. Must have been irritating as all get out.

Needle nose pliers are great for this. Keep them in the first aid kit.
