@antonia_investing: Your payslip is probably leaking salary you could legally keep. On a £35,000 salary in 2026/27, £6,280 is deducted before you see a penny — £4,486 in income tax and £1,794 in National Insurance. That's £17.19 every single day of the year. Three legal ways to reduce it: Salary sacrifice pension contributions. Paying into your pension via salary sacrifice reduces your gross taxable pay before income tax and NI are calculated. On £35,000, contributing £100/month via salary sacrifice saves you the 8% NI you would otherwise pay on that amount. You still get income tax relief either way, but salary sacrifice also removes the NI cost. Marriage Allowance. If you're married or in a civil partnership and one partner earns under £12,570, they can transfer up to £1,260 of their personal allowance to the higher earner — saving up to £252 per year. Claims can be backdated up to four tax years. Employer benefit schemes. Cycle to Work, electric vehicle salary sacrifice and workplace nursery schemes (all subject to limits) all reduce your taxable salary before income tax and NI are applied. Check what your employer offers — many people never do. All figures based on 2026/27 HMRC income tax and National Insurance rates. Standard personal allowance of £12,570 assumed. No pension contributions, student loan or other deductions included in headline figures. Figures assume England and Wales income tax rates, earner below state pension age. Tax savings are illustrative and depend on individual circumstances. This is general information only and does not constitute personal financial or tax advice. Pensions are pointless. they are increasing the age limit to 57 in the uk and then to 70 by the time most people here retire. which means nobody will actually get to spend their pension..your better off using your own money and investing
