@beyondflorida: Texas-based DR Horton is suing Sarasota County. Why? DR Horton and the Smith Family want to re-zone the Smith family farm from "open use rural" to "Residential", but the county has denied their request. Sarasota claims the development is too close to Celery Fields, a 140 acre bird sanctuary. DR Horton and the Smith family have filed a lawsuit, which you can see at my website, just click my bio. It’s RARE that Sarasota county denies development. It’s horrendously over developed. I really really hope the county wins this suit

That’s funny didn’t that property just flood two years ago? It isn’t the county fighting a massive lawsuit from hundreds of homeowners in Sarasota because their property flooded because developers decided to build on a flood plane and send their runoff into the community?

As someone who lives about 5-8 minutes from the Celery Fields, it is vital for protecting pretty much everything in the area! We definitely do not need more housing, with the already crazy amount of the housing developments the flooding will be crazy. The hurricanes from 2024 showed how bad the flooding can get. I would love to see the flood maps overlaid on the plans just to see.

This is the game. Buy up land zoned for “farming/ag” and then try to get it rezoned for development.

Horton is a horrible builder. Celery Fields are amazing and I believe the estimate of 100,000 is well understated. The county just built their own building overlooking the celery fields oddly enough. Hopefully the county prevails.
