Coco went barefoot and all the advice I had was it’ll chip and crack and you have to close your eyes for like 3-4 months before they “learn” to be barefoot. He can do it!! It’ll be scary but it won’t be bad!

Farrier here- I recommend California trace hoof supplement and farrier barrier topically. Both make a big difference for my clients. If he’s sound and comfortable, I would let him go a couple cycles and reassess. Old nail holes will chip as they grow out.

I took my mares hind shoes off, and she's still working. Had a few chips the first two months but not bad, & honestly she feels a lot more balanced and comfy. Decided to pull them to help the angle- they would grow a lot and fast

Chipping is super normal especially if he’s used to hind shoes! It takes a second for the foot to get used to actually having access to the ground. Don’t panic. Super normal! You may want to ask your farrier for an old rasp or get a mini one that you can just file down any chips so they don’t get worse!

Give him a good hoof supplement and give it time. They will toughen up. Like someone else said turpentine helps too

Keratex hoof hardener is magic I use it to keep my competing jumper barefoot all around also their hoof gel in winter/wet conditions

Give it time! Mine went from 4 shoes to no shoes once he semi retired. Went through a scary phase but now he’s great!

I haven’t pulled back shoes but I use iodine spray to harden my horses feet during the wet season and works great!

Brianna was the same way when she went barefoot! She’s now got solid feet and hold up fine it’ll just take time and it will hurt your eyes for a bit 🤣

There will be an adjustment , make sure your farrier knows how to trim for barefoot. Supplements won’t help for a long time because like our nails the new growth comes from the top…

it does take time when they've been use to being shod , my competition horses always get their shoes off every winter break. a good hoof supplement , regular trims/oil is the best help

Chiming in for keratex. And also a feed through supplement like SmartHoof/Farriers Formula etc. those will take time to see results but they’ve really helped my guy over the last 8-9 months. He only has front shoes.

Spend the money on more frequent trims to reduce major cracking/breaking… prob 3-4 wks to start. Will also help the shape & balance stay more consistent with the transition! Crackdown supplement is great for horses with low growth & poor quality feet

It’s exactly like getting acrylics taken off your own nails. It’s going to take growing out to really improve. Keretex, hoof supplements and consistent trims will be your friends as they grow out.
