sorry bud but if I was putting that eave course on then I'd stack 6 to 8 slates on top of each other and use a petrol saw.

Easy to cut across the slate but when you need to come to a point, it’s much harder. For a valley cut I mean, takes a lot of skill

A Zak hammer was a good choice. Move the slate, not the hammer, keeping it central to the iron. Hope you’re using 10 mm copper nails, ribbed and shanked, nothing else will do 👍
