also, the americas were not a monolith and were not colonized at the same time. the french and english largely showed up in the 1600s after 100 years of the diseases having been spread to all parts of north america. so for them, they arrived at a depopulated continent where the dozen or so civilizations had collapsed and the various peoples were activly trying to regroup after losing 90% of their people. meanwhile the colonists had an empire supporting them.

Just because they won doesn't mean they're right, or good. Conquest and colonization are inherently immoral, this isn't complicated.

Not a perfect comparison, but a more modern day example supporting your position is the Vietnam War. The Vietnamese people were able to use guerrilla warfare and their knowledge of the land so successfully that they forced the US military - arguably the powerful military in the planet - to withdraw. Think of the differences in technology and weaponry between the two groups. It still blows my mind!

in AP World History we had to read a book called "guns, germs and steel" all about how colonizers had the advantage bc they had guns and germs... I recommend anybody read it if they think that indigenous people were the lesser people somehow. it was basically luck that made colonizers successful.

Also BOTH the Inca were going through a civil war, and the Aztec/Mexica were facing multiple enemies who allied with the colonizers and the colonizers took all the credit!

Gunpowder weapons made it uneven as well. Really easy to call someone bad at fighting when you have a gun and they didn't.

Small pox and syphilis are huge variables that worked against the indigenous people's. Knowing that the block and line style of fighting from the 16th and 17th century was not dynamic and would have failed vs guerilla warfare.

People like to pretend that all the colonizers were dressed in plate armor for each battle when that really wasn’t the case. Especially as you get further south, it was far too hot to stay in full plate garb for extended periods of time. Some historians estimate that as much as 90% of indigenous folks died before seeing their colonizers because the diseases brought over literally plagued the whole continent and no one had any antibodies or experience with treatments for them specifically.

Someone please tell me why it matters who the colonizers are? Literally most societies colonized someone else at some point in history.

Yes, just look at the Mapuche peoples of Chile, they were never defeated by the spanish conquistadors and settlers, because the Mapuche were (are) warriors. For 300 years they resisted and fought the colonisers, until Spain agreed to sign a peace deal. Apparently the Inca warned the spanish colonisers of the Mapuche, but the colonisers didn't believe them. The Mapuche had already resisted and fought the Inca empire for almost 90 years before the Inca decided to give up the conquest of the Mapuche territory.

You really need to study the history of the "peaceful" indigenous peoples of the Americas. It doesn't excuse bad behavior of colonists, but it's not like there were no wars before white man came..

I learned this shit in middle school - the education system in certain states (by design) really lets their hate fester & grow rather than challenge it with fact

Like 80-90% of the native population died from smallpox. I mean I guess that’s a type of weapon. But don’t forget that European settlers had actual metal cannons and guns. Or that we ruined their environment, their means of subsistence. I read about a native chief in Maine who walked to Boston to argue against the dams being built bc the water and fish weren’t available and after walking to Boston unsurprisingly they did nothing for him

if they declared war right off the bat they would've lost as they did against the revolutions and guerilla/resistance groups in the Caribbean. but we were kind and welcomed em n they used that against our ancestors. plus their diseases. dirty, no morals, two faced n evil as many of their descendants r today.
