And there are three that bear witness in earth…” Why this longer phrase appears only in these Bibles It does NOT appear in the earliest Greek manuscripts (1st–10th century). It appears only in a few late medieval manuscripts (15th–16th century), and usually in the margin. Most scholars conclude it was added later, possibly as a doctrinal clarification during debates about the Trinity. Modern translations remove it because it is not original to John. Meaning of the Original Words The Spirit God’s holy spirit acting as a witness about Jesus. The Water Usually understood as: Jesus’ baptism, where God testified about His Son. The Blood Jesus’ sacrificial death, also testifying to who He is. Together The three testify that Jesus is the Messiah and the Son of God.
