For those who don’t know, this is Otto Warmbier, a student from the University of Virginia. He traveled to China for fun whilst also having the intentions to study in Hong Kong. When he was there, he took a trip to Pyongyang (the capital of North Korea) to immerse himself in all the cultures. This trip was arranged by the Beijing-based touring company named “Young Pioneer Tours.” His time there was going smoothly, staying at the “Yanggakdo International Hotel” and staying with his tour group. On January 1st 2016, 1:57 AM, he found a propaganda poster hung up on the wall. He decided to the take the poster with him, and on January 2nd it was time to leave. The airport caught him bringing the propaganda poster with him, and got detained. He was stuck in North Korea for 74 days. That was until March 16th, 2016, when he was given an official sentence. He was given 15 MONTHS of hard labor for a quote unquote “crime against the state.” On June 13th 2017, Otto was officially released and brought to Cincinnati Ohio USA in a comatose state. (A state where one cannot wake up or in a long state of unconsciousness, otherwise known as a coma.) While at the hospital, it was revealed that he had suffered extensive brain damage. He soon passed away six days later on June 19th 2017.
