@myteacherface: Replying to @shanon_2000 #greenscreen After starting with a rubric that had SO MANY sections that it took me longer to fill out the rubric than grade the essay, I made my own version of an essay rubric. This worked beautifully for me for years and gave my students a clear understanding of where they were lacking and what they needed to do to improve 💯 #Myteacherface #funnyteacher #teachers #teachersoftiktok
It always frustrated me how subjective essay grades were. I remember in 5th grade we had a reoccurring assignment for each charpter of the giver. Started off with a poor grade, but revised my approach until I got a 100. Figured great, I have the formula for a 100 on this assignment. Then the next one was an 85… the goal posts move… every assignment had to be an “improvement” from the last to get full credit even though the assignment was the same just for a different chapter.

A great and practical manner of building and assessing an essay in a real context.

what do you mean the students threw out the papers? don't you have to archive any written grades?

That how all my grading works. There is a chart to show them how many points they need to pass the class. Every assignment is worth so many points and they know all the assignments when I give the syllabus

In my district, 75 is the provincial average so I always mentally start marking a fully completed essay at that threshold. Then as I read through and mark, I see where it falls below or rises above that threshold and by how much.

My students would be like my grade went down ten points, I had an A. No that single homework in the grade book was not your grade. Your grade is a cumulative summary of the work you do. You never had an A. Anyone else miss when they were in our green grade book nd kids had to keep track and check in? I kinda do.

my history teacher gave points on long answer questions and it was frustrating because it wasn't clear what exactly earned points. he would say "write a paragraph worthy of ten points" so i would get 10 bullet points of information and rewrite them in a paragraph but I would get like 5/10.

American essays are so easy. In the Russian system you could still follow the simple plan, but you were expected to make it “interesting”. I would be ashamed to just hand in smth “simple”. You’re supposed to channel the soul of Dostoevsky in your literature essay and suffer😅
