I don’t fully agree with the idea that we should always be “authentic” and reject anything that feels like performance. In real life, functioning in society often requires a certain level of professionalism and self-control — which can look like “performing.” Take The Walt Disney Company parks as an example. Do you think every employee there is genuinely happy all the time? Of course not. But they still choose to show a positive attitude because that’s part of their role and responsibility. If everyone only acted on their raw, moment-to-moment emotions, it would make everyday interactions much harder. Sometimes “performance” isn’t fake — it’s a form of respect, discipline, and social awareness. To me, being an adult means knowing when to be authentic, and when to manage your emotions for the sake of others.
