Thanks Janet Taxes! Taxes! Mainers pay 10.64% of their total personal income to state and local government. That breaks down to 4.14% in property taxes, 3.02% in income taxes, and 3.48% in sales and excise taxes. Add in a 31.4¢/gal gas tax and an estate tax that kicks in even after you die, and the picture gets even more grim. Every dollar Augusta takes is a dollar Maine families can't put toward their heating bill, their grocery tab, or their kids' future.
