“That’s 850k you could have invested.” With what money? The money I got from being a doctor? Oh yeah that’s right, I didn’t become a doctor because of all this invisible money I had to invest in the market!

Unfortunately we have a doctor shortage, regardless if the debt is never ending or not, we still need people to become physicians

one of the reasons I wanted to go into medicine was because of the financial stability to support my family. PhD is no better. people say pick something else, as if being a banker or working in finance is nearly as fulfilling. where do we go?

These are all fair points and I do not disagree with your analysis. However money is not the only factor in determining if med school is “worth it” broadly. Like how dare a person want to go to med school to learn medicine and become a doctor to help people yk.

Just qualify for a loan repayment program and work in a underserved area… after the first four years, your loans become like a expensive car payment

How about we talk about the quality of life for anyone making $330k. You completely ignore the fact that QoL at that pay rate, is incredibly high even with extreme debt.

The only thing that can help is negotiating loan repayment in your first contract. All of this is so stupid. Credit scores and interest rates should not be deterrents for higher education.

how many people will explain this here on TikTok but not to their school admins? At the core of this, schools are overpriced. I think there’s often a lot of bloat that could be cut to ease the burden on students, so why not talk about that?

PSLF helps a lot with the math of these large loans, just has to be in the game plan from the get go. RAP plan will help with interesting subsidies during residency as well. I agree that amount of loan is never a financially responsible move but there are ways to

Honestly doing the math made me lose motivation but I guess I'm still applying this cycle just to see if I can get into some cheap schools. Seriously thinking if I should try and study in another country now

But don’t you just have to pay for 10 years at the minimum before forgiveness

People need to wake up. Loans aren’t the issue, the COST OF MEDICAL SCHOOLS ARE THE PROBLEM. America has the highest cost for medical schools in the world. Even if there r limitless loans, the cost needs to addressed.

With those numbers I Think you essentially have to go into a specialty where you can ensure at least a 400k salary. Then that 800k debt paid will be made back in 2 years of salary. Also need to factor in spouse. If you have a 6 figure earning spouse it also can make the payment more justified.

Respectfully this is the worst take I have heard in a long time. Do you truly believe society would cede the role of a physician to AI? Patients would not go for this, physicians who lead our medical institutions will not go for this, nor would the politicians who want to keep our country a scientific powerhouse.

You’re right who knows what’s gonna happen in two decades or more but the flipside of that is there is a not insignificant risk of the NP profession being gutted legally. Rightfully so if you ask me, but regardless, it also should be noted that if a physician decided they need more money, they have a lot more tools in their belt to make that happen
