Disclaimer: Sea Shepherd was taken over by new leadership after its founder, Paul Watson, was removed. They no longer do the direct-action campaigns they were famous for. If you want to understand why, look up why Paul Watson was pushed out of his own organization. I grew up watching Whale Wars and supporting Sea Shepherd. I was a huge fan. But I’ve completely switched my support to the Captain Paul Watson Organization now. Paul Watson founded Sea Shepherd. They kicked him out. Then they claimed all the ships he personally acquired were actually organization property. He lost everything. On top of that, the new leadership damaged some of those ships and effectively killed one of the fleet. The organization I admired no longer does risky, high-seas interventions against illegal whaling or shark finning. Instead, they focus mainly on collecting plastic pollution — which is fine, but it’s not the same mission. They removed the heart of the organization, and it shows. I’m not saying this out of blind anger. I’m saying it because people still donate to Sea Shepherd thinking of Whale Wars and Paul Watson. That’s not what Sea Shepherd is anymore. If you care about aggressive, direct-action ocean conservation, please look into the Captain Paul Watson Organization. That’s where the real work is happening now.
