@astrokirsten: 47 million galaxies. One map. Every single dot you’re seeing is an entire galaxy — and we’re somewhere in the middle of it all. This map comes from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument, DESI for short. For five years, DESI used 5,000 fibre-optic “eyes” to collect light from galaxies so far away that some of that light started its journey before Earth even existed. But this isn’t just a pretty picture. It’s a time machine. Because light takes time to travel, the farther away a galaxy is, the further back in time we’re seeing it. Using that idea, DESI traced 11 billion years of cosmic history — helping scientists study one of the universe’s biggest mysteries: dark energy. The ultimate fate of the universe — whether it expands forever, tears itself apart, or does something completely unexpected — depends on dark energy. And DESI could help us understand it. Science is happening in real time — and the universe might still surprise us. #DarkEnergy #Galaxies #Astronomy #Universe #Space

I love space and hate it all at the same time. This is amazing and uncomfortable 😂

wait when you say Early Data, do you mean closer to us (younger light) or further away (older light)

Schrodinger's Box, are you sure you really want to know the answer on whether or not the universe continues expansion or inevitably contracts? Perhaps the truth is that it already has happened and we just haven't caught up to it yet because we measure so many things based on "time".

how does it capture only galaxies, not stars, supernovas, whatever? Do they just filter the noise?

"all I know is that I know nothing" seems to be the most acceptable thing I can say besides "holy cow!"
I can't wait for the analysis of all this new data

As kid they told us we seeing a lot of stars and they have some planets around them. But im impressed how our knowledge has changed since then. A great time living around the giants of knowledge 😬

Is this data enough to make a conclusion on how dark energy is behaving or do we need to observe more galaxies

I hope it collapses and gives birth to a new universe. It would be sad if one day the universe were to fully die forever.
