I'm surprised with some of the hate being thrown at Spaceballs. It was incredibly popular and beloved at the time, and for many years after. I suspect it's a case that many of the jokes are tied to the era. People aren't going to get that Dot Matrix is the name of a printer, or recognize the voice of Joan Rivers. The reference to a Doublemint Gum commercial (the twins Marline and Charline). The absolute chokehold that Jon Bon Jovi had on the nation. The thrill of recognizing legendary Michael Winslow from the Police Academy movies. The pure star power of Rick Moranis and of John Candy. The experience of getting a VHS and hunting through the tape to find a specific part. Living in a period of time when there were only three Star Wars films. Star Trek was universally known but not universally loved.

a great film. and honestly if silent films started hitting theaters again id watch them. But I know im likley in the minority there. still would love to make one though

In the 1970's people still remembered watching silent films as a real thing (even people born after the 20's, silent films didn't disappear right away). They weren't a piece of forgotten history, so the effect on the audience of the time was much more direct than today. It was a parody about something they knew.

i never thought mel brooks movies would make me cry, but my friend who loved brooks passed away last year and now when i watch them i cry

Sounds just like how the studios asked Brooks to film Young Frankenstein in colour so they could "decide later" whether they wanted to release it in black and white or not.

Some of it was filmed on the campus of UC Irvine while classes were in session and I was a student. Paul Newman scenes were shot there and apparently he got irritated with some of the students.

I hope Spaceballs isn't one of his most beloved films. I love the guy, but I like the films where he clearly loves the subject of the spoof (Young Frankenstein, High Anxiety). Spaceballs is a tough watch for me because it really looks like he has little beyond contempt for Star Wars, which, fine, he can have his opinions. I just like him better when he likes stuff
