I’m not from Polk County, but I recently found a lost puppy there. I had a responsible person who was willing to foster the puppy while we tried to locate the owner. When I called to report the puppy, the dispatcher told me I had no choice and that I HAD to turn the dog over to Animal Control immediately. She said I could not have someone hold the puppy in the meantime, and she warned me that I could be charged with stealing it if I didn’t surrender the pup. They sent Animal Control officers nearly 45 minutes away to pick him up. I was heartbroken. I didn’t want to let him go. It felt like I was sending a baby to prison.
