Autistic mom. Pediatric hygiene 12 years, dentistry 28 years…. No ultrasonic use while pt is in office. Even hang a note in sterilization don’t use while pt is there. Some of my autistic pts refuse to sit in the chair so I clean them standing. Those kids who can not tolerate prophy paste texture, I tell mom to bring their own toothpaste. That helps relax them about the appt. I do have those that like to hold hands, I stick out my pinky and let them hold that so I still have control over what I’m doing for safety. ❤️And when the non verbal non touching kids side hug you after their appt, it’s a total win for slowing down, making positive appt experiences and reducing anxiety. Little things go a very long way. And each pt is different so trial and error, find what works for that pt ❤️

We suspect my oldest is level 1! The dentist was a nightmare! We finally got this one hygienist that was an angel! She was like hey sis wanna skip this today and go play with me? They went to play and then scheduled “play dates” every 3 months and after a few “play dates” my little asked to *try* to get her teeth brushed by “best friend”! Some appointments are still bare minimum getting done but as long as we are with “best friend” we are going to at least get something done might be pictures, my be brushing teeth, might be *sparkles* painted on, might be all of it just depends on the day but we are always able to avoid a panic attack now as long as best friend is there! 🥰

It has taken nearly 10 years for my son to lie down comfortably in the chair and cooperate. Nine years ago, I moved 45 minutes away from our dentist, but I still drive there every six months because the dental assistants are the best with my son. They are always the same staff and never pressure him into doing things he isn't comfortable with. They consistently explain each step to my son, which helps him feel more at ease.

If you could, post a video that includes a tour of your office and even have someone model what will happen in a routine exam. My son has a sensory disorder and it helps so much when I can prep him! If he can see what he’s walking into and be prepared, it’s so much easier

I remember when I would go to the dentist as a kid he would have TVs on the ceiling so I could essentially watch something on TV while I’m getting my teeth cleaned, which can be helpful if there’s ever any you know fillings or just basic cleanings

I recently took my daughter to her dental appointment, and she had a really hard time sitting in the chair and allowing the dentist to take X-rays and clean her teeth. You’re only thinking about what if stuff goes good what happens if that patient had a dentist in the past with unwell are you gonna undo that damage and get through a normal stage you’re talking about first introduction sometimes you don’t get that introduction so go with someone who’s had a bad experience what are you gonna say? How are you gonna fix that damage because I am looking into putting some money into the business businesses and I am not too sure about this one.

Spot on as always! I really love this patient population. We do progressive visits at my office as often as the parent wants!! I’ve found singing sometimes soothes them too😂
