I can’t tell you how comforting it is to hear you talk about this and how much I relate to it. I planned my escape for almost a year. I set up a bank account he couldn’t access and tried to save what I could even though I was still hoping it could get better. I started going to church, I was going to therapy. And then in January there was a moment of clarity where I just knew that this was going to be my life forever if I didn’t leave. I was able to find an apartment and on 3/9 I packed up what I could and left while he was at work. It’s been so hard. I’m so relieved in some ways and so sad in others. I miss him so much sometimes it hurts and then other times I hate him more than I’ve ever hated anyone.

27 years, and I don't know how to leave. I just can't, and I don't know why.

I start getting financially ready 1 year before and emotionally for 10 years. As soon as the last one was home from college, I left 9 months later. It takes planning and strategy.

I am in planning, started in March. I needed 1 thing, a job. I landed that as a nursing assistant at a hospital an hour away (but in my hometown where my parents still live). I told myself from the time I start, I will give myself at most 4 months and then I'll leave. I start orientation on Monday (so first of September). Time to figure out my paychecks and clean out the house and get things set up over there. But the light is getting brighter

I seem to be stuck in planning mode but I’m gonna go I’m just not sure when. I’m disabled now so it’s been slow trying to get all my ducks in a row

I felt the need to leave awhile ago but had the fear of not being able to go anywhere or being able to financially afford to leave. I started talking to an old boyfriend (yes just talking) and he found out about it and asked me to leave. It was like a weight was lifted off of me and I packed my stuff and moved in with my sister. That was February 20th. Today I meet with my lawyer. It has been an exhausting couple of months but I have to do this. I’m praying for the strength to see it through to the end.

Agree with you 💯 I planned my exit around a year ahead too and like you rightly said even though it’s the right thing to do it’s not easy to muster the courage leave just sooner

Thank you for your post. I’ve been married 44 years, and didn’t realize i was in a n narcissistic relationship until ten years ago. I thought that my marriage was the norm. I don’t know why I’m still living in this toxic relationship. How on earth can I find the strength to leave?

Same! It was probably a good 6-9 months of mentally preparing. It’s like everyone says “a good woman doesn’t just walk out, she has been mentally done for a long time!” After I left, he tried to get me to come back but it was like a light switch flipped and I was completely done. For the first time in our relationship, I was in control. There was a time when I wanted to call it all off and try again but thank God I didn’t. I found strength that I never knew I had. Then I started praying for God to send me the RIGHT man. He indeed did. He sent my soulmate. It’s bitter sweet watching your videos. It’s a trigger all these years later but also a sweet reminder that I overcame the biggest mountain in my entire life.

And I think it’s the fact you leave and you know it’s going to be bad until all of it is over. I prayed and surrendered it all to God and whatever happened
