Emily Pearson, who lives in Minneapolis, has spent most of her life unable to tolerate sunlight. Her symptoms began at 8, when minutes outdoors could leave her hands and feet in severe pain for days. At 17, doctors at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, diagnosed her with erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP), a rare disorder that causes painful reactions to sunlight. In 2025, Pearson learned about a clinical trial for bitopertin, a drug that targets protoporphyrin IX, a molecule activated by sunlight in people with EPP. She began taking the drug in July 2025 and, within weeks, her tolerance to sunlight began to increase. Bitopertin is now in Phase 3 trials, with 183 patients enrolled and data expected later this year. The FDA has declined to review the drug for expedited approval, saying more data is needed on its impact.
