One river in Vietnam that I’d like to describe is the Perfume River, or Hương Giang in Vietnamese. It flows through the ancient city of Huế, which is located in central Vietnam. The river is quite famous for its calm, serene beauty. Its water is usually a deep blue or dark green, but what makes it special is that during autumn, flowers from orchards upstream fall into the water, giving it a gentle, sweet fragrance—hence the name “Perfume River.” The river winds gently through the city, passing by many historical sites, including the Imperial Citadel, royal tombs, and pagodas. On both sides, you can see lush greenery, old banyan trees, and traditional garden houses. I find this river particularly memorable for two reasons. First, it’s not just a natural feature but deeply connected to Vietnam’s history and culture. For centuries, emperors and poets drew inspiration from its peaceful beauty. Second, I have a personal memory of taking a dragon boat cruise along the river at sunset. The sky turned orange and purple, and the reflections on the water were absolutely breathtaking. That moment felt like stepping back in time. In short, the Perfume River is more than just a body of water—it’s the soul of Huế, representing both the tranquility and the enduring spirit of Vietnamese culture.
