A meniscus tear is a common knee injury that affects the meniscus, a C-shaped piece of cartilage in the knee joint that acts as a shock absorber between the femur (thigh bone) and tibia (shin bone). Each knee has two menisci: • Medial meniscus (inner side of the knee) • Lateral meniscus (outer side of the knee) Causes of a Meniscus Tear Meniscus tears often occur due to twisting or sudden rotational movements of the knee, especially when the foot is planted. Common causes include: • Sports injuries (e.g., sudden pivots in football, basketball, or tennis) • Heavy lifting or deep squatting • Age-related degeneration (wear and tear over time) Types of Meniscus Tears The severity and pattern of the tear can vary: • Radial tear – Extends from the inner edge outward, often in the middle of the meniscus. • Horizontal tear – Runs parallel to the surface of the meniscus. • Bucket-handle tear – A large, displaced tear that can cause the knee to lock. • Flap tear – A small piece of the meniscus becomes loose and may cause catching sensations. • Degenerative tear – Associated with aging, usually caused by gradual wear and tear. Symptoms of a Meniscus Tear • Pain (especially along the joint line) • Swelling • Stiffness or reduced range of motion • Clicking, popping, or catching in the knee • Knee locking (if a piece of the torn meniscus gets stuck in the joint) Treatment Options Treatment depends on the type, size, and location of the tear, as well as the individual’s age and activity level: Non-Surgical (Conservative) Treatment: • RICE Protocol (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) • Pain Management (NSAIDs like ibuprofen) • Physical Therapy (Strengthening surrounding muscles for stability) Surgical Treatment: • Arthroscopic Meniscectomy – Removing the damaged part of the meniscus. • Meniscus Repair – Stitching the torn edges together (if the tear is in a vascular area). • Meniscus Transplant (rare cases) Return to Sport After a Meniscus Tear Recovery depends on whether surgery was required: • Without surgery: 4-6 weeks with rehab • Meniscectomy: 4-8 weeks • Meniscus repair: 3-6 months #meniscus #meniscustear #meniscussurgery
