There’s no reason to fly Southwest anymore if you have other options

It’s incredibly funny to me that one of the first topics you learn about in an intro to marketing class, brand equity, is something so few private equity firms care about.

I got put in one for free, I didn’t even realize we had extra leg room until they offered me an extra bag of pistachios

The geniuses at SW stripped away all competitive advantages they had. The company will go belly up (bailed out by govt) within 5 years

I was a loyal Southwest passenger for years! Every flight I took was a Southwest one, I didn’t even look at other airlines. These changes have destroyed the brand and I will not fly Southwest again. It’s so sad to see greed destroy this

The entire reason southwest was seen as attractive as it was was because it was “the family airline” with low prices and a very friendly staff. Now their prices are almost if not just as high as the big three where you get better amenities at every level an honestly better experience overall.

I genuinely went from flying Southwest every time I had a trip to justifying $40 more expensive United flights 😭😭😭

heavy on the distance from infants… arguably the main advantage of buying a first or business class seat. a higher chance of quiet solace is priceless even compared complimentary meals/legroom

My home airport, BWI, is a fortress for Southwest and growing up it was incredible. My Dad had the companion pass so he’d bring me along for the ride and it let me fly back and forth to college for good rates and with all my bags for free. It’s heartbreaking to see it’s an airline that combines the worst of the legacy carrier features with the worst of the low cost features; an airline for nobody now

You didn’t mention that you pay extra for a premium seat and then end up having to put your carry on 5 rows behind you. It’s infuriating.

I go to college outside of my state. It was cheaper to fly delta, sit in premium economy and check a bag (flying an RJ but still) than it was flying Southwest

The only selling point of the "premium" seating is you can get off easier because EVERYONE has a carry on now that they got rid of free checked bags.

Turning southwest into a legacy carrier from the 90s feels like sabotage of some form…

On the upside, if Southwest starts seriously hemorrhaging customers to the point where other airlines (my beloved United) can make inroads into those mostly-Southwest airports (Long Beach, John Wayne, etc.), I would be thrilled.

As an employee, I will straight up tell you all: the company was dying on the inside before the private equity investor came in.
Southwest had two choices:
Become like Frontier/Spirit, or become like Delta/United/American.
And I'm beyond thrilled we chose the route we did.
Is it perfect? Absolutely not. But, we're already being asked about long haul flying by our unions, the company is lining up partnerships around the world, and we're going to look WAY different in 5 years.
And I'm thrilled about it.

They reduced their economy seat leg room but it’s still an inch more than a lot of United’s economy seating.
