Reading to my kids is one of my biggest joys as a parent, my daughter is 4 and we read all the classics from my childhood - the worst witch, pippi longstocking, Anne of green gables and it’s such a bonding moment every night before bed, I love it

So true! My 3 all loved finger puppet books and books with sliding parts when they were really little. I have read with mine since they were born we take them to the library every week and I've made sure they see me read. I'm a teacher myself and see the effects of this statistic I have definitely seen a shift in literacy skills especially since Covid but it impacts their understanding of the content we study. I'm having to provide definitions for words I historically didn't need to and the secondary school I work in noted this issue so, in tutorial every morning we read a book aloud to the students and they follow along with a ruler. We've read White Fang, a Chinese Cinderella, War Horse, The Pearl, lots of topics for discussion and they've seen me react to the literature too (occasionally cry) we have connected as a tutor group over some of these books!

I used to sit and read to my kids when they were probably just six months old (probably even younger). They could practice turning the pages etc or chewing board books. It became part of their bedtime routine from a very young age. It’s a real joy to do.

Also raising a bookworm over here! Love it and love to hear his vocabulary demonstrate daily that all of the benefits spoken about are 100% true. Questionable but I used to read my own books (often crime/thriller) out loud to him when he was a newborn and wouldn’t settle at night 😂

As somone with dyslexia, I always do worry about readying to my children one day, but I ask somone to read the book to me first then after that I got it, my daughter is 4 and love reading and will pick books over many things, now with my son he’s not into them like her but we still keep going xx

It’s my favourite. Honestly, all the play pretend and matchbox, dinosaur etc. can’t compete. Book time is hands down my favourite time. What are your favourites for a toddler?

My son is obsessed with books and I love it. I think boys generally read less or stop reading in their teens, which is so sad. So I’m doing everything I can stop that cliff edge
