Under coach Kamogawa, he develops from a complete beginner into a disciplined fighter, learning techniques like the ones on display in this fight against Sendo. First the liver blow, then the feint into the Gazelle Punch, and the OP drops… that’s when you know what’s coming is going to HIT. Ippo finally gets the opening and goes straight into the Dempsey Roll, his signature move, inspired by the real-life weaving style used by Jack Dempsey, who used constant head movement and momentum to overwhelm opponents.
