A federal judge on Friday approved the Justice Department’s bid to make public grand jury transcripts from a federal probe in Florida involving convicted sex offender #JeffreyEpstein. The department renewed its push for disclosure last month, shortly after Congress passed — and President #Trump signed — a law directing the attorney general to release records tied to the government’s Epstein investigation. U.S. District Judge Rodney Smith granted the request in a short order. In their filing, Attorney General Pam Bondi, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche and other federal lawyers argued that the transcripts should be cleared for release and that any protective orders blocking public access should be lifted, citing the statute’s “clear mandate.” “The Legislative and Executive Branches have nearly unanimously directed the Department of Justice to make records related to the Epstein and Maxwell investigations publicly available,” they wrote. The Trump administration had first sought to unseal grand jury material in Florida and New York back in July, after drawing criticism for a DOJ memo claiming that additional disclosures about Epstein were neither “appropriate nor warranted.” According to that memo, a joint DOJ–FBI review found no evidence of a “client list” or any indication that Epstein had blackmailed influential individuals. Investigators also “did not uncover evidence that could predicate any investigation against uncharged third parties.” Judges in both states rejected the administration’s initial effort, pointing to long-standing federal rules that keep grand jury proceedings confidential. But after Congress passed the Epstein Files Transparency Act, the administration renewed its push, insisting the new law superseded traditional secrecy requirements. Officials said any victim information or personal identifiers would be removed before the transcripts were made public. Federal grand juries convened in West Palm Beach in 2005 and 2007 to examine Epstein’s conduct. He avoided federal prosecution at the time through a controversial plea deal that allowed him to plead guilty in state court to prostitution charges. He was later arrested in 2019 on federal sex-trafficking charges, but died in custody before he could stand trial.#fyp #viral
