@cahdoria: Please watch until the end. Algorithms don't know the real world, but they're still being used to make life-altering decisions about your life: whether you get a job, whether you get a loan from the bank, whether you get arrested or stopped at the airport. To train most algorithms, you need to clean the data, remove outliers, and simplify the data as much as you can — and that removal of complexity, or what we can call the epistemological flattening of complexity, is an epistemic violence. B Because you assert violence through knowledge and the categorization of knowledge. You remove the real complexity of the world to create a make-believe world where ideology, power, and culture don't exist. But that yes, an algorithm can understand. Data scientist and AI experts need to start to understand that. 🔄 Please share this video to raise awareness of epistemic violence in AI and data science. If we don't change this now, we will live in a world worse than Black Mirror. ✨ About me: I'm Catharina Doria, an AI ethicist and one of the 100 Most Brilliant Women in AI Ethics™️. @ciara: I love your content! AI just does not have the potential everyone is talking about . This is one example of why!

Elsa | AI Safety & Law :
Humans flatten and oversimplify reality, we put people and things in boxes, make generalisations etc... alllll the time. This is how we can form abstraction to function in the world. We simply cannot grasp it's full complexity. Same logic applies to AI. This is how we ended up with gender roles, prejudices based on your job or how you look, assumptions we make about people depending on how they dress... Also another issue here is that the way you phrase things makes it sound like humans first simplify the world and then feed it to AI. This is not how this works at all. Machine learning engineers don't play this kind of role in the training of AI models.
