As an immigrant as well (in my case, France), people definitely note that you want to practice and speak, now my French is conversational, but in the beginning I got corrected so many times and helped by them saying the words with the correct accent (both of them still happen from time to time). But people appreciate the effort that we make to speak their language, in both cases, as an immigrant I can see it and as a portuguese when I'm in Portugal, I do appreciate it Plus I always have a few dictionaris on my phone so if some random word that I don't know is said or written somewhere I can search it and add it to my vocabulary
