I have no idea how PICU nurses do it everyday! I work in organ donation and have to occasionally work donor cases in PICU and that's more than enough for me!

And you don’t even have to be a nurse to feel it.. I was a janitor in the PICU unit for awhile and I went home every day crying. I felt especially helpless because I couldn’t do anything for the families but take their trash out.

Every nurse has a trauma cup. You never know when the cup will be full. It could be 1 trauma it could be 2000. Eventually the cup fills for most. ❤️🩹

One of the things that’s helped me last over 10 years in this field is remembering that these horrible things are always going to happen whether I’m there or not, and I feel better knowing that I’m there for them versus if I left and chose to pretend that these things didn’t exist. I think everyone is built for the specialty they land in because after two years in adults during the pandemic, I immediately went back to pediatrics.

I did PICU for 14 years. Were there sad cases? Absolutely! But more often than not the kids are resiliant and get better. I teach now in NorCal, but miss my lil patients!

My baby was in the PICU, I felt so safe with the staff. When he was stable enough to go to the neurology unit, I broke down because the knowledge and care was completely different.

I’ve worked on almost every floor of the hospital (float pool for YEARS). I have always said…. PICU ARE THE WORKHORSES OF THE HOSPITAL. They are legit the most bad ass! Couldn’t do it.
