Sloth :

The second person is what we call a “bumping guy” (butsukari ojisan) in Japan. They deliberately bump into women and children, but they never do it to people who look stronger than them. If you raise your voice or act intimidating, they usually run away right away. They’re just lonely people looking for attention. There are female versions too, but they’re mostly older men, so beautiful women should be especially careful.

No the shift is 100000% real. I lived in japan for 6 months in 2009 and the experience was a complete 180 going back I could feel the tension. It honestly made me really sad. I talked to my old friends (foreigners still living in japan for 20+ years) and they said it is crazy I am feeling it as a white person.

Also please be sure to look into your legal rights as a visitor and a native. Assault is never okay and it's good to be informed if, God forbid, a situation escalates.
