the spain I visited several times I heard oh OK I thought you were American and I've been to several countries around the world and the same it was my most common response. I also once said I'm canadian but I was born in the usa and when they saw my passport said born in the usa the reaction was clearly dislike. I was shocked but I don't consider my self American since I never lived there but I definitely got a very different response and this is traveling the last 25 years all over Europe and hitting every continent.

I went to Scotland last summer, and everyone was super nice to me. And some of them did ask me where I was from. They’re still super kind to me.

I think it’s also we’re so used to being seen as ‘bad tourist’ that we really try our best when we travel. My friend group took basic Japanese lessons before a 2 week trip so we could get around without looking too lost. We ended up surprising a lot of our hotel and restaurant staff and had a great time!

We are use to tipping in the US.. So we tip everywhere we go. I even gave a pair of shoes away to a kid.

I’m so nervous going to Italy and Bavaria in a few weeks because I’ve heard stories of Americans being yelled at, so this makes me feel better! I can’t wait to see everything and try so many new things! 😆😁

Tbf… depends on where you work- I get 5 weeks of vacay. My dad/sisters company you can have as much time off as you want as long as ur work gets done. My friends job is remote so she just travels and works a few hrs a day 😂

I have been to Spain a couple of times and Italy in the last year and everyone was very nice. It was great. I had one small negative moment in France but I assume that server's attitude was not based on my nationality.

Even though Americans can be individualistic and self centered (other countries aren’t on our minds much) we are surrounded by so many cultures daily so we are thoughtful tourists. I love seeing how places and people are different.

I’ve only been to Scotland but we have friends there we still keep in touch with. Not one person was rude to us when we visited.

American here who’s lived and traveled abroad: totally agree with this take; I’ve always been amazed at the hospitality from locals in other countries. Sure, I’ve had some very pointed questions about American politics, but it comes from genuine curiosity
