But also worked, if I remember correctly, for the rescue attempts the titanic looked closer than it was so when ships where looking for a sinking ship (say) 12 miles away and saw a ship that appeared to be only 6 miles away they assumed it couldn’t be the titanic

keep in mind when the Carpathia came to the Titanic's rescue the captain put three more iceberg lookouts in the front. because there wasn't room in the Crow's nest there were some at the very front of the ship. every iceberg that was found on the way to rescue was found by people at the front of the ship, without binoculars

binoculars were rarely used by lookouts unless it was to confirm something they’d already spotted, and even less so at night - so that wouldn’t have helped either
