If your outlet sits too far back in the wall—often due to added drywall, tile, or paneling—it can look bad and create a loose or unsafe install. The fix is straightforward. Outlet spacers are typically 1/8 inch thick and can be stacked to bring the outlet flush with the wall surface. In this example, I use two spacers to achieve about 1/4 inch of adjustment, which is usually the sweet spot (you can go up to around 3/8 inch depending on the situation). I walk through placing the spacers behind the outlet, orienting them so they stay aligned while tightening the screws, and securing everything back into place. The result is a properly supported outlet that sits flush and looks much cleaner.
