@anthonypillarella: The more I work with people on their social skills, the more I realize just how much their fear of being awkward is holding people back. Then I certainly can't fault them, I felt the same way. In fact, my own progress and social skills was delayed by months if not years because I was trying so hard to optimize out any and all awkwardness from all of my interactions. But I think that's the wrong approach. because awkwardness isn't simply having "bad" social skills. It is the feeling someone gets when they realize they don't actually know what's going on or what they're supposed to do. So even though it feels like being more direct with your intentions or anxieties will just create awkwardness, it almost always removes a lot more than it adds. And I was shocked at how big of a difference this made in my social life. #socialskills #charisma #communicationskills #meetingpeople #SelfImprovement

I did not realize this is what I did to no longer be so awkward but u articulated this so well ur so right. I just started being direct and being awkward hasn’t been an big issue since. Even moments like saying a joke that doesn’t land can be saved by pointing out my own flop in a funny way

In my experience, charisma/“smoothness” isn’t about having the perfect things to say or avoid awkwardness/embarrassment, it’s about being able to recognize it on the moment, even acknowledge it, & redirect/play it off as quickly as possible. Not in a fake way—I guess what I mean is that embarrassment/awkwardness is very human. If you can think of it that way you can reframe something potentially embarrassing into something authentically relatable, honest, & even charming. I hope that makes sense

So I should state the ambiguity? Either be more direct on what I should do, or tell people what I expect from them? sounds great!

I had this realisation in the last year. you end up being more relaxed when you're ok with looking a bit awkward at times.

This is so helpful! I blamed so much of my awkwardness on social anxiety which is def part of it but am now realising I've been treating every conversation as some competition to be won

Announcing that I have autism when other people seem confused was a game changer for me. The moment that other people had an adequate, but harmless explanation for how I was acting, they were very happy to talk to me. Especially because the only other explanation they had for why I was sometimes blunt and cold was "doesn't enjoy their company," which would be off-putting to anybody.
