@fulfillpassport: Taking the White Pass and Yukon Route railroad in Skagway, Alaska is one of those experiences that really puts the scale of the Klondike Gold Rush into perspective. It is often called the Scenic Railway of the World, and as soon as you start climbing away from the cruise docks and into the mountains, it is easy to see why. You are basically riding along a narrow-gauge track that was carved right into the side of the cliffs back in 1898, and the engineering required to build it through such rugged terrain is honestly mind-blowing. The ride itself is incredibly dramatic as you ascend nearly 3,000 feet in just about twenty miles. You pass by massive glaciers, roaring waterfalls like Bridal Veil Falls, and deep gorges that make the vintage rail cars feel very small against the Alaskan wilderness. One of the coolest parts is crossing the high trestles and looking down into the valleys below; it gives you a real sense of what the prospectors faced when they were trekking up the Chilkoot Trail on foot. What makes it great is that you get to see landscapes that are completely inaccessible by car. The train features large windows and even outdoor viewing platforms between the cars, which is perfect for getting a clear shot of the scenery or just feeling that crisp mountain air. The guides on board do a fantastic job of sharing stories about the stampeders and the local history, so you aren't just looking at pretty views—you’re learning about the incredible grit it took to settle this area.
