@therapydebbie: Somatic awareness is a skill that builds over time!! Help your client get there and then it’ll be easier for them to do it on their own
As a reminder, somatic therapy is not good for BIPOC.

THANK YOU. “Where is that in your body?” It’s not. It’s nowhere and this question makes me feel broken/alien, like something is inherently wrong w me in comparison to others. 😭

what do you even mean, in our body? my feelings are feelings, not physical sensations

No where, the point is we’ve disassociated from our feelings for so long we’ve become numb to them.

I’m a lifelong intellectualizer, and my therapist did this when I first started with her! I had been dissociated from my body for a vast majority of my life, and I used to get SO angry when I would get asked where I felt something in my body. Through her using the “making contact” technique, she helped me a lot, and now I’m able to tell her exactly where I’m feeling things in my body, and when I’m intellectualizing instead of feeling.

Where can a therapist learn more about this? Any books/textbooks you recommend? I just finished a Linda Thai training on somatic embodiment but I still have a lot of learning to do.

I’m a therapist who intellectualizes. My therapist will mirror me in session and it’s helped to bring awareness to my body!

My therapist does both. She’s reading my body language, autonomic responses while asking to attempt to get me out of my brain a little.

I intellectualize a lot, and my therapist can tell when I am starting to dissociate. So she will ask me what is coming up for me in that moment. And then I will talk about what I am thinking or feeling and then she will ask me where I feel that and to sit with that and that really helps me first

Yes 👏🙌 these are great tips! We have to teach our clients how to do these things, how to feel (physically and emotionally) their emotions 👏👏

I actually combine these. I ask first before offering observations to dig in to. It lets us work with the dissonance and keeps them centred as the expert of their experience. You say you don't, but here's what I saw you doing. You didn't feel yourself do that? What does that mean to you? Let's build awareness. etc. It starts an internal tracking process while not overriding their autonomy.

I love my intellectualizing clients make no active response to their emotions in sessions. I use somatic charts with descriptions of sensations. "what do you notice coming up physically for you right now as you recall this experience" "how do you notice yourself reacting as we talk about this" can also be good ones
