@dr.lisa.dpt: What is your experience with the Runna app? I’ve never used it before, but this is just feedback I’ve heard from other runners #runna #runningtips #marathontrainingplan #halfmarathontraining #halfmarathontraining

This is because most people are overconfident in their abilities and input the incorrect expectations during the plan build. It’s not the apps fault

as a beginner runna has been amazing, change the settings fam you can make it easier. ive got it set that i do 1 long run a week and 1 hard run every 2nd week so week 1 is 2x easy 1 long, week 2 is 1 hard 1 easy 1 long.

I'm sorry but I don't think is the app. I totally agree that the BEST way to train is with a coach and a personalized program....but not everyone can afford that. Runna, as long as you are truly honest about your level/pace, it's a great tool. I have never had an aggressive session. I run 3 times per week and have had a super balanced program.

Can you overdue it? Sure, but the app is not the problem. If you have a pain? Cool your jets for a few days. LISTEN TO YOUR BODY. You can absolutely skip or modify the runs if you need to. Runna helped me go from nothing to running 10-12 miles/ week. Not to mention I started at 250+ pounds, so that was a huge feat. Did I follow it exactly? No. Was I consistent? Yes. (on a 58 week streak- woot woot) I'm forever grateful for how my life as changed since starting Runna. With no experience, it gave me the direction I needed, when I couldn't afford a running coach.

Runna is only "aggressive" if you don't know what you are doing. There are a bunch of advanced settings that you can toggle how many speed workouts, how aggressive your long runs are etc. Also if you don't set accurate run times it will set your paces to improve that. It also automatically resets paces etc when it realizes your paces are not being met. So many options..

What do you think about the Nike Run Club app?

I honestly love Runna, I’ve been using if for 3 years now and this is the first time in my adult life that I haven’t had constant niggles or injuries. The app for me has been really good with the mix of easy and harder runs. Having said that I think people need to know that a plan isn’t cut and dry. You need to use common sense with these things like stepping back if it’s too much and being realistic about your abilities

Please keep calling out those AI running app. They really need to do better. People (especially beginners with basically 0 experience) should not have to tweak a million advanced setting to get a half decent plan. I used an AI plan for my first Half Marathon and obviously it got me overtrained and injured. Now I "coach" myself with way better results and I realise how freaking insane these kind of plan were (and still are).

I agree nothing will beat an actual person as a run coach. People also aren’t honest about their abilities when they setup run plans in the app. If you’re new to running and set the highest mileage and highest difficulty settings injuries are bound to happen. Runna can be useful ONLY if people choose settings currently suitable for them and not what they think they can achieve one day.

What if you skip a long run one week ? Do you still increase or leave the same?

Garmin had the same issues-multiple runs would be scheduled speed workouts a week.

Lisa your content is great, I love it. One thing you should consider when treating your runna patient is to asked how they have it set up. Runna follows the weekly mileage progressive by default IF you let it. You are drawing conclusion from small N as well.

My Runna actually feels quite conservative and tells me to chill out to avoid injury and burnout 😳

I use it, and just used it for a 10k race. I think as long as you're somewhat aware of your body and capability, it's very useful. I don't take it as gospel and will adjust my pace and mileage if I need to. I have mine set for 1 interval/temp run a week, an easy run and a long run.

i used runna as a beginner, always only run 3x per week and it was never aggressive or increased my mileage rapidly. when you start each program, they have a questionaire that you should be honest with. you can even adjust throughout the program! people should just stop comparing themselves on the internet and want to go from non runner to a marathoner within a year....

My main issue with Runna though is the big jump of only doing a few kms at a time at marathon pace in the speed workouts, to all of a sudden large chunks of race pace when you’re already fatigued! I had a little hip flexor niggle from that big jump

Great information. I used Runna as a couch to marathon and it worked for me but I knew Runna pushed hard. I added time to my base stats so it started slower and I pulled back when I needed. I really like Runna because it syncs with my treadmill and I can digitally move workouts around or modify them. I am going to use it again for my next marathon but I will manually put in another training plan I am using
