I don’t think it was meant to portray him as child like. I think it was meant to portray him as lonely. That’s why he had so many animals and was playing with bubbles in the next scene. And yes in reality he did enjoy games. I think you missed the mark thoroughly

While I do appreciate your analysis I thought about it in a different way. I think MJ was lonely in a way his brothers didn’t fully understand at the time. They could go out and party and have fun. MJ’s popularity was far superior that I doubt he could do the same. I think MJ had negative memories with his brothers when it came to band practices and whatnot. But the genuine fun memories with his brothers came from playing games like twister. Which is why he bought it for nostalgic reasons and to bring back those fun memories. Like most siblings would……the brothers said no…..bc why would they play a kid game instead of playing basketball. Nobody was wrong in this situation really, but it was a moment of realization for MJ to see that he was lonesome even in his own family at times. Which is why I think he would cling to certain things like watching movies with his mom. These activities are what reminds him of being a brother or a son……not a global superstar.

“Do not fall for it”? Nah sis this is not it . That scene was about him feeling lonely . Also ya’ll need to cool it with all this . So many other scenes were cut from the film because of legal reasons . Who knows how deep they were gonna take it about Michael and his personal issues . We may never know . Also there’s obviously gonna be a second film!

He did not have a childhood because he was a working child. His father made him practice & perform so he could take care of his family. He was the youngest out of the 5. You are judging him based off of what MOST kids experience. 🙄

I think the reason people feel this way is because the movie failed to delve into all the pain Michael went through. Because he DID act like this, but not in a Disney princess perfection way. It was childhood regression. He didn’t talk to animals cause he was just pure of heart. It was because he felt uncomfortable around most people.

its absolutely worth looking at this scene with a critical lens. if anything, the way I read it is that he is increasingly isolated from life and family, trapping himself in his own Neverland. though perhaps I am putting some of my own experiences into this — i myself spent a good chunk of childhood isolated from my peers.

Funny you mention Tatum O’Neil because Michael describes being scared to be intimate with her. And Tatum always says their relationship was like a friendship. Later in life he definitely matured but especially in the timeline of the movie he was scared of intimacy
