The first time I read about Melchizedek in Genesis 14, I honestly thought he was just a mysterious side character. Abraham rescues Lot, returns from battle, and suddenly a king-priest named Melchizedek appears, blesses Abraham, receives a tenth from him, and then disappears from the story. No genealogy. No family line. No record of his birth. No record of his death. Nothing. For years I thought that was simply an interesting detail in Abraham’s journey. But have you ever noticed that God often hides some of the biggest revelations in what seem like the smallest passages? The more I studied Genesis alongside Psalm 110 and Hebrews 7, the more I realized that Melchizedek was never placed there accidentally. God was revealing Jesus long before Moses received the Law, long before Aaron became High Priest, and long before the temple was ever built. What caught my attention was not simply who Melchizedek was, but when he appeared. He appears before the Levitical priesthood. Before sacrifices became central to Israel’s worship. Before the priesthood of Aaron. Before all the systems that Israel would later depend on. It is almost as if God was showing from the very beginning that His ultimate plan of redemption would never rest on the Law itself. Then David writes centuries later and suddenly brings Melchizedek back into the conversation. In Psalm 110, a chapter recognized by both Jews and Christians as speaking about the coming Messiah, David writes that the Messiah would be a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek. Not according to Aaron. Not according to Levi. Melchizedek. That should immediately make us ask why. Because under the Law, kings came from Judah while priests came from Levi. The offices were separated. Yet David speaks of a coming King who would also be a Priest forever. Then Hebrews pulls back the curtain. Melchizedek is presented in Scripture without a recorded genealogy, without a beginning, without an ending, and without a successor taking his place. I am not saying this proves Melchizedek was Jesus before Bethlehem, though some faithful Christians hold that view. What I find remarkable is that God intentionally presents him this way so that he becomes a picture of Christ. Even his titles point toward Jesus. Melchizedek means “King of Righteousness.” He is also called the king of Salem, meaning peace. Then Isaiah later prophesies of a coming King called the Prince of Peace. Paul teaches that Christ Himself becomes our righteousness. Do you see the pattern? The story is not trying to make us obsessed with Melchizedek. The story is trying to make us amazed by Jesus. Melchizedek blessed Abraham, but Jesus fulfills the promise given to Abraham in Genesis 12. Melchizedek received a tenth from Abraham, but Jesus receives worship from every tribe, tongue, and nation as seen throughout Revelation. Melchizedek served as a priest-king for a season, but Jesus is the eternal Priest-King who lives forever and continually intercedes for His people. And perhaps this is the most beautiful realization of all. Long before Bethlehem. Long before Calvary, Long before the empty tomb. God was already preaching Christ through the pages of Genesis. Just as David was a shadow of the coming King, just as the Passover lamb pointed forward to the Lamb of God, and just as the temple pointed toward God’s dwelling among men, Melchizedek was another signpost pointing toward Jesus. Now you understand why this mysterious man appears so suddenly in Scripture and why Hebrews spends so much time explaining him. The story was never ultimately about Melchizedek. It was always about Christ. The King of Righteousness. The Prince of Peace. The eternal High Priest. The One whom God had been revealing from the very beginning. This is why reading your Bible is important. Please, spend time with Jesus today and read. Praying for us all, Jesus loves you and take care.
