The PLEASE skill is a core part of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) that focuses on reducing our vulnerability to intense emotions by taking care of our physical wellbeing. While it won’t eliminate anxiety, depression, anger, or sadness, it can make these emotions feel more manageable by strengthening the foundation they’re built upon. We often think of mental health as something that exists entirely within our minds, but our brains are part of our bodies. When we’re physically unwell, skipping meals, using substances to cope, running on very little sleep, or rarely moving our bodies, our nervous system has fewer resources available to regulate stress and emotion. It’s much harder to use coping skills when we’re already physically depleted. The PLEASE skill reminds us that looking after our physical health is not selfish, lazy, or unrelated to our mental wellbeing, it’s an important part of emotional resilience. This doesn’t mean that everyone who eats well, exercises, and sleeps enough will never struggle with their mental health. Mental illnesses are real, complex, and influenced by many biological, psychological, and social factors. However, these lifestyle habits can reduce our vulnerability to emotional overwhelm and make it easier to cope with whatever life throws at us. Think of PLEASE as lowering the volume of emotional suffering rather than silencing it completely. You still deserve compassion if you’re struggling to eat regularly, sleep well, exercise, or manage a physical illness. These are not moral achievements, and they aren’t always within our control. Instead, they are gentle reminders that caring for our bodies is also a way of caring for our minds. Sometimes the most effective psychological skill isn’t changing your thoughts, it’s giving your brain the sleep, nourishment, movement, medical care, and support it needs to function at its best. Looking after yourself won’t solve every problem, but it can put you in a much stronger position to face them with greater resilience, clarity, and self-compassion 💙 You're Doing Great 💙 #DBT #MentalHealth #Psychology
