An explosion threw several police officers off their feet and ignited a major five-alarm fire as they responded to a domestic call in the South Ozone Park area of Queens, New York City, in the early hours of Thursday, April 30. Bodycam footage posted by Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch shows the moment of the blast and officers, despite being blown away by the explosion, rushing inside the building to rescue children and adults. “The guy just set the house on fire….we got an explosion,” an officer is heard saying over a police radio. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he had been briefed on the “horrific situation involving a dispute that led to an explosion and fire” that “left multiple people injured and displaced.” The victims included “seven members of the NYPD and one firefighter — all of whom sustained minor injuries and are in stable condition,” the mayor said. Speaking to media outside the home, NYPD Assistant Chief Christopher McIntosh said police officers were responding to a 911 call received shortly before 3 am from a woman who said her intoxicated husband had forced his way into the residence and was threatening her with a knife. The woman’s daughter and two grandchildren “managed to flee to safety,” McIntosh added. The woman got out of the apartment where she provided responding police officers with a key to the home, McIntosh said. The explosion occurred as officers tried to enter the home to arrest the man, whom he identified as 50-year-old Anroop Parasram. FDNY Chief of Department John Esposito said the fire engulfed the building and eventually caused it to collapse. Police said Parasram was missing but was believed to have been killed in the fire, according to ABC7NY.
