What confuses me a bit about this episode is while Judd mentions that Lydia was never in a married relationship, but in one of The Handmaid's Tale flashback she says she had a husband once but they had a divorce. Idk this might be another proof that the producers of The Testaments don't really gaf about the plot or the timeline they are suppose to follow after The Handmaid's Tale... Or maybe I don't remember it correctly idk

I'm watching everything out of order. I would maybe agree that she's a victim of Gilead based on the Testaments series, but then I happened to watch the Aunt Lydia episode in Season 3 where she turns on Noelle, because she's seemingly ashamed of herself / embarrassed by the rejection, and it seems its always been kind of an instinct beyond just survival to protect herself, which I guess is probably the result of religion / society - but like I said I am watching everything out of order and haven't even finished the Handmaid's Tale TV series

Lydia was 100% doing it for herself in the beginning, as time went on we see her in the most recent episode writing and recording stuff- the pages look pretty full so it seems she’s been doing it for a while🤨 Possibly when the handmaids tale ended..

This isn’t a one or the other kind of situation, it’s a survival situation and no one here in this comment section would know what they actually do until they’re in it. You’d like to think you couldn’t become what Lydia became but even Lydia herself didn’t think she could either. That’s the point

i think her character is too complex to say whether she’s a villain or a victim. it’s possible to be both. yes, she was victimized and a lot of what she’s done has been for her own survival. i know in the books she’s working towards dismantling the system from the inside, but we really haven’t seen that in the show. looking at it from the show’s perspective, she’s definitely both (from what we’ve seen so far)
