There is no jury in a preliminary trial. Preliminary trials establish probable cause for the arrest, this happened before the real trail begins.

The job of a defense attorney is not to prove innocence, it’s to bring reasonable doubt to the prosecution’s case. And the prosecution’s job is to prove guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Defense doesn’t have to believe that they are innocent, or even make you believe they are innocent. Just present enough doubt that cannot be dismissed.
