@simonethomp: BEFORE YOU GET MAD AT ME: this is in reference to crunchy “wellness” people who distrust medicine because it’s trendy. Okay thank you don’t yell at me #nursing #antivaxx #conspiracytheories #doctorsoftiktok #healthcare
People who don’t do vaccines like omg they do not understand the physiology behind it at all. Lack of knowledge breeds ignorance

I’m also in nursing school and what blows my mind is that one of my classmates who has multiple kids told me she isn’t vaccinating her other children because vaccines cause autism. I was in shock because what do you mean you want to be a nurse but don’t trust medicine? Makes no sense

I’m an anesthesiologist. My best friend is an oncologist and I can tell you that neither of us would be able to do the others job. Medicine is so nuanced as you specialize

What you’re describing is this, the Dunning-Kruger effect. I talk about this literally every chance I get. With medical misinformation and dangerously uninformed and uneducated people like RFK jr. being put in positions of power and causing mistrust in doctors, research, and medicine, the majority of the population is sitting on top of the peak of Mount Stupid and thinking they know enough to make an educated and informed decision about things like not vaccinating their kids, when they truly know NOTHING and it is destroying public health.

I hear you on the point you are trying to make and don’t disagree. But I also run into doctors all the time who don’t know what is wrong with me and I am not unique in this experience. As a nursing student your patients will appreciate it if you understand this experience too.

I am a nurse. My husband always compares medicine to mechanics. If you pay a mechanic to repair your car, you trust their expertise. Same goes for your providers. I’m coming to you for medical advice. I don’t need to know everything!

I agree. And at the same time, people don’t realize we’re not meant to put our entire trust into any human being. We’re meant to go to the professionals for their expertise, and make decisions for ourselves.

I know nothing, just maybe the ANS but even at it’s just scratching the surface of it. That’s with taking A&P being a MA for couples years and doing 14 page research project on it.

Cue all the comments about "well this happened to ME" and 99.999999% of them were just not understanding what their provider told them.

yea but sometimes there’s a reason like being treated for 10 years on prednisone 40mg qd and monthly medrol without testing for autoimmune, so you finally demand an Ana and bam but by then there’s damage from the treatment for 10 years

Yes. I thought I knew everything when I was younger and was so anti vax, anti anything medical.. til I realized I know absolutely nothing and sitting in bed reading some random studies online is NOT ‘doing research.’ The amount of time and education doctors put into learning about our bodies and medicine is more than anything I thought I knew lol. I can barely grasp some basic physiology concepts and that’s when I fully realized I know way less than I thought. I also started working with doctors and it helped remove that weird evil image I had of them in my head, they are not out to get us like it was put in my head.
