@summer.mccurry: My favorite little zipper club boy🥹👼🏼 Today is National Zipper Club Day❤️‍🩹 I carry so much pride and pain in honoring what that means. The “Zipper Club” is made up of heart warriors. Children who have bravely faced open-heart surgery and are left with a scar down their chest that looks like a zipper. A symbol of survival. A mark of TRUE strength. Congenital Heart Defects (CHD) affect 1 in 100 babies, making it the most common birth defect in the world. But what many people don’t realize is how complex and different every case can be. For some, CHD might mean just one surgery. For others, it means a long list of diagnoses, countless hospital stays, and a fight that feels never ending. Our Everett was born with 9 different heart defects. His heart was beautifully unique and incredibly complex. Through it all, he was so strong. He had to wait over a year for his open-heart surgery to grow and build up enough strength to endure. Doctors told us he would never survive it. That he was too sick, too fragile. But God performed miracles! Not only did he make it through, but we were gifted three more precious months with him after that surgery. Time we were never promised and time we will always treasure. And this year this day feels even more personal than before. Now, our sweet bestie Cousin Ella Jane is part of the zipper club too. @Ashtin Smart ❤️‍🩹 Walking this road yourself hurts. Watching your family that you love walk this road hurts almost just as much, because we know exactly what they feel. The challenges that every single day brings, which most will never be able to understand unless they’ve walked it too. This is why Everett’s Light is so heavy on my heart. This is truly my why. These families, these babies, these hospital rooms. It feels like a second home to us. If we can be even the smallest bit of light for someone in that place, we will never stop showing up for it. Today I share this to spread awareness. For the babies still fighting, the families praying by their bedsides, and the ones gone too soon that we hold forever in our hearts.
