In a case that shocked the Newton Park community in Gqeberha, Anke-Mari Cilliers has been sentenced to an effective 20 years in prison for her role in the savage murder of 65-year-old businessman Daniel De Jager. High on drugs and accompanied by her lover Leeroy Scholtz (sentenced to 25 years the previous day), Cilliers entered De Jager’s home shortly after midnight on 30 October last year and participated in his brutal killing. According to Cilliers’ guilty plea in the Gqeberha High Court, De Jager’s then-girlfriend, Estelle Le Grange (57), allegedly masterminded the murder, repeatedly approaching the couple to carry out the deed. Le Grange claimed she could no longer tolerate De Jager’s alleged abusive behaviour, shouting, swearing, and creating an unstable environment for everyone in the home. The couple, who rented a garden flatlet on the property, initially refused but later agreed after a heated argument over scrap metal. Le Grange reportedly provided clear instructions: choke and stab him. On the night of the murder, she handed them the house keys through a window. While Cilliers waited in the laundry area, Scholtz entered the bedroom. De Jager woke up and asked, “What’s going on?” before being bludgeoned to death with a hammer. The trio then staged the scene as a house robbery by ransacking the property, breaking a glass door and burglar bars, and stealing items including De Jager’s Nissan Juke. After the killing, Cilliers and Scholtz used the victim’s bank cards to withdraw R4,450 at a Humewood Spar, dumped the vehicle, and booked into the Road Lodge Hotel in Summerstrand for the night. They even returned the next day with food for Le Grange, who had been tied up with cable ties to make the robbery story believable. Cilliers pleaded guilty to murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, defeating the ends of justice, and the prohibition of abuse of older persons. In a tearful apology after sentencing, she expressed remorse to De Jager’s family. This horrific case highlights the vulnerability of older persons and the devastating consequences of domestic manipulation and betrayal. While two perpetrators have faced justice, Estelle Le Grange’s trial continues next week. True justice demands full accountability for everyone involved. May Daniel De Jager’s soul rest in peace, and may his family find strength during this painful time. Cases like this remind us why advocacy for elder protection and swift justice remains essential in our society. #JusticeForDanielDeJager #HammerMurder #GqeberhaCrime #NoMercyForMurderers
