I don't think Val hurt Cher deliberately and Cher for being a wise person actually understands this too. It's just the age gap and life situation that drive them apart. The man was young and life was just unfolding out and blooming for him at that point and he wanted to see what life has to offer and have to put love aside for all that. Cher was hurt but still loved him until his last day. The passion was gone but real friendship has replaced it.
