During this period, hormonal and ovarian changes occur that prepare the female for a possible pregnancy. 🔸 PROESTRUS: Progesterone decreases while estradiol increases. The cow begins to show behavioral changes, but she is not yet receptive to mounting. 🔸 ESTRUS (HEAT): This is the most important stage for heat detection. The cow accepts mounting and may show restlessness, increased activity, and clear cervical mucus. Estrus usually lasts around 12–18 hours. 🔸 METESTRUS: Ovulation occurs after estrus, approximately 10–12 hours after the end of estrus. The corpus luteum then begins to develop, and progesterone levels increase again. 🔸 DIESTRUS: The corpus luteum is fully functional and produces progesterone, preparing the uterus for a possible pregnancy. If pregnancy does not occur, the corpus luteum regresses and a new cycle begins. 🔥 WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND THESE STAGES? Because correctly identifying estrus helps with better decision-making in natural mating, artificial insemination, and synchronization programs. It also helps us understand why the timing of breeding or insemination is so important. ⚠️ One important point: Seeing mucus does not necessarily mean that the cow is at the exact right time for insemination.
