A major trade blow for South Africa as US President Donald Trump moves to suspend the country from a key American trade preference programme. On 2 November 2026, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer announced that Washington plans to suspend South Africa and Rwanda from the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). The decision follows a determination by President Donald Trump that the two countries' practices conflict with AGOA's eligibility requirements. For South Africa, Washington has cited concerns including: * Barriers to US trade and investment. * Corruption. * National security and foreign policy concerns. The Trump administration has also criticised President Cyril Ramaphosa's government over its foreign policy, particularly South Africa's case against Israel at the International Court of Justice. South Africa rejects Washington's accusations of persecution of white people, while Israel denies committing genocide. Reuters South Africa is the largest beneficiary of AGOA. According to Reuters, South African exports under the programme were worth approximately $1.7 billion in 2025. The consequences could affect exporters, manufacturers, agricultural producers, automotive suppliers and thousands of jobs linked to access to the American market. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? AGOA provides qualifying African exports with preferential, often duty-free, access to the US market. Losing eligibility would mean South African exporters lose those preferences, although it does not mean that all trade between the two countries stops. The programme itself has been extended until December 2028, but individual countries can still lose eligibility. South Africa's Trade Minister Parks Tau had said government was prepared for an adverse eligibility decision and remained open to negotiations with Washington. President Cyril Ramaphosa has also emphasised the need to diversify South Africa's trade partnerships. The political and economic consequences could be significant. Is this the beginning of a deeper economic confrontation between Washington and Pretoria? Date: 2 November 2026 Author: Moors #SouthAfrica #DonaldTrump #AGOA #CyrilRamaphosa #fyp
