• Jewish leaders accepted the plan (despite its imperfections and fragmented territory). Arab leaders in Palestine and the Arab League rejected it outright, viewing any Jewish sovereignty on what they saw as Arab land as illegitimate and a violation of self-determination for the Arab majority. They declared they would resist it by force.
Violence erupted the very next day (November 30, 1947). Arab irregulars ambushed a Jewish bus near Lod (Lydda), killing passengers—an event often cited as the start of the 1947–48 civil war. This was followed by ambushes on roads, attacks on Jewish neighborhoods and settlements, sniping, bombings in cities like Jerusalem and Haifa, and a general strike called by the Arab Higher Committee.
