American Farm interviews: We recently spent a week traveling across the country to speak with American farmers and ranchers about the struggles they’re facing. Meet Stephen and Jim Farr of Niota, Tennessee. This father-son duo runs a small family-owned dairy farm and has been significantly impacted by rising costs, shrinking profit margins, and unstable pricing for years. Jim, who’s been in the dairy business for 47 years, tells us he does not know what the future of the farm will look like. This brings him to tears. He also discussed the common misconception that farmers are making significant money as grocery prices continue to rise. Jim tells us he sells 100 lbs of milk to distributors for $20 (100 lbs of milk makes twelve 1-gallon containers). Based on grocery prices, there are significant markups before it ever reaches your basket. Both men made it clear they’re not political, but they did say they were against the Trump administration’s plan to bring beef from Argentina into the US to help lower prices. They argue the quality is not up to American standards and that it would negatively impact US farmers who are not making the type of money retailers and distributors are. According to Stephen, the day it was announced that the US would be importing beef from Argentina, the price per lb of beef cows immediately fell (but did not in the grocery store) Jim warned that if things don’t change, many farmers will not survive. This would lead to the US relying on foreign imports or large corporations controlling more farmland. Jim also talked about debt in this industry, which that is a serious issue. The price of equipment, feed, and labor is astronomical. Recently, he financed four “robot” milkers, which cost roughly $200,000 each. No matter what the dairy market does, he has to make those payments every month. When asked about talk that the federal government may use tariff revenues to offset impacts to American farmers, Jim said he’s heard about it but hasn’t seen anything materialize. Our full docuseries with the Farr’s and the others we interviewed will be up on our YouTube in the next few weeks. YouTube channel: @ realnewsnobs
